Abstract: A fossil palm based on truly palmate leaves is described from the Liyan Formation (Miocene) of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. It has been identified with the genus Trachycarpus H. Wendl. and assigned to a new species, T. ladakhensis. It is the first megafossil record of a member of the temperate element which seems to have entered the Himalaya during the Miocene from the mainland of Asia on the north.
