Abstract: The genus Glossopteris so abundant in the southern Palaeozoic flora has neither been properly circumscribed nor correctly delimited into species so far. The reason for this is a complete lack of accepted criteria on which to base these delimitations. In the present paper, the views expressed and the work done so far on this problem have been summarized. On the basis of the study of several hundred specimens from the Barakar and Raniganj stages as well as a survey of published literature some suggestions have been put forth for bringing harmony in the specfic circumscription within this genus.
